Dawn’s story is about how she is regaining her health through proper assessment and treatment specific to her body’s needs.
“I began visiting Dr. Keough in March 2011 for a damaged coccyx (tailbone) and lower back pain. I had been thrown from a horse in April 2010 and had seen several doctors and specialists. The only option given to me was surgery to have my coccyx/ tailbone removed. I was at the end of my rope. I had never seen a chiropractor before and I was very skeptical.
Upon meeting Dr. Keough she was very informative, gentle and caring. Her genuine interest in my health was refreshing. As she worked on my coccyx, hips, lower back and neck; she also wanted to know about my diet and my health as a whole. I explained that I suffered from infertility issues, fatigue, anxiety and multiple digestive issues.
After filling out a survey about my overall health and doing complete blood work she discovered many issues that needed to be addressed. She suggested a clean diet with no processed foods as a start.
She then proposed the 21 day elimination diet. This is a diet in which a person removes the top 7 most allergenic food groups from their diet. Then on day 21 you reintroduce one food wait four days and observe any reactions. She suggested that my body could have a sensitivity to one or more of these groups and this could be encouraging additional inflammation in my body, thus more pain from my injury. I have never been a person who diets. However, I was very desperate to feel well again and would do anything to get out of pain. So I decided to try this diet.
The first two weeks were the worst and then it got a lot better. I did not think about it like a diet but more of an experiment that I needed to be very focused on not eating the 7 allergy foods. Amazing enough, even though this was not the reason I began this diet I lost 19 lbs in the first month.
I discovered I was gluten intolerant/ sensitive and I had a lactose sensitivity. That was 4 months ago. I continue to avoid lactose, gluten and eat a very clean diet.
I recently had blood work done at my OBGYN’s office and my hormone levels and folic acid levels were great! She asked what I was doing and was happy to see the change in my blood work (previous blood work showed hormones imbalance and low folic acid levels). I have become so interested in research about gluten and lactose sensitivities, as well as, learning as much as I can about healthy foods. I live a fairly clean eating life steering clear of processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, etc.. I was a fast food junkie but now I love learning about how to make my body run better with less pain and complications”.
Thank you Dr. Keough
