There aren’t enough superlatives..

Thank you Mark for sharing your experience at Keough Chiropractic! Congratulations on taking the necessary steps to live the lifestyle you want!

“There aren’t enough superlatives to describe my successful treatments from Dr. Keough. After a string of experiences with other seemingly helpful, but disinterested chiropractors, I was to the point of halfway shrugging off the preventative chiro care thing. Relocating to a new part of the country causes one to push certain concerns into the back row while focusing on the tasks at-hand. A chance meeting reminded me that, hey, it’s been a while since I had my alignment checked, and with a welcoming smile and cheerful attitude, Dr. Keough patiently listened to my history and concerns.
It took Dr. Keough seconds rather than monthly sessions, to identify my conditions. Dr. Keough’s refreshing and impressive ability to explain a condition and solution inspired me to take charge of my self-improvement. Dr. Keough continues to want to understand my list of conditions and patiently and gently provides solutions. Respectfully, I continue to listen to her and continue my assigned stretches and continue to see and feel exciting results.
My latest change was through orthotics. Ya don’t really… think that a pair of orthotics would change one’s life. Dare I say that I feel brand new (and perhaps a few years younger)?! It’s not a farfetched statement and I continue to refer anyone looking for chiropractic care to Dr. Keough.
Thank YOU for all that you do, Dr. Keough.”

Seemingly Minor aches and pains ignored now will cause Major problems later

Before Valerie chose chiropractic care her life was slowed down by the annoying aches and tired muscles and headaches that plagued her on a daily basis. The pain wasn’t debilitating and she could still perform her daily routine but she noticed that over time the problem began to hinder her lifestyle. Eventually, holding her grandson was very difficult because of the physical stress that comes with holding a baby. She needed frequent breaks and rest periods to regain her strength and energy and give the pain time to subside. Now her grandson is almost two and of course requires a TON of energy. Valerie has been under regular chiropractic care and is able to hold him and play with him without pain or the breaks she needed before. What a change of pace!

Its the small aches and pains that seem to be minor and harmless that will accumulate over time and cause the body harm in the future. Small aches in your spine and joints, and tight, sore muscles are the body’s way of telling us our spine and nervous system (think of this as the axis or the master control center of your body) is in need of alignment and adjusting.  Valerie’s body had simply reached the pain threshold from the interference that was residing in her spine and any extra stress (physical, mental, emotional) caused her body to experience more pain. Chiropractic adjustments remove stress and interference from the spine and allows a pain free well functioning body.  LISTEN to your body, its always talking to you.

Read what Valerie has to say:

“The care of Dr. Keough has been nothing but outstanding.  She is very passionate about the well being of her patients.  She has helped me tremendously.  I am now able to do my normal activities with little or no discomfort, not to mention I take very little pain medication anymore.  I believe the treatments have helped with headaches as well as my back issues and posture.” ~ Valerie A.

Thanks for sharing those heart felt words Valerie. Another reason I LOVE being a chiropractic physician.

Clinical Study: Statins May Raise Diabetes Risk in Older Women

I wanted to share a new clinical study was just released yesterday that found women taking a statin were 48% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those not taking a statin.  This study followed 154,000 post-menopausal women for an average of 7 years, and these results match similar results of other recent studies.  The link to more detailed information on this study is below.

I have attached the DFH protocol for Cholesterol Reduction, which outlines specific lifestyle and dietary recommendations along with possible use of Lipotrienols RYR, Foresterol, Niacin CRT, and/or OmegAvail Ultra.  If you have any questions, please call.

Better sleep for Parents and Baby

Do you  have a new born that just will not sleep through the night? Do you wonder if their is ANY solution to this problem? Perhaps you know someone who is experiencing this. If so, read the testimonial below and find out a safe, all-natural solution to getting better sleep for you and your baby.

“Before making out first appointment with Dr. Keough, my son Ryan (4 months at the time) was NOT sleeping through the night. He was getting in 10-15 min intervals through the night if we were lucky. He was constantly crabby and fussy and spitting up which was starting to take a toll on my husband and I. After just a few adjustments we noticed longer sleep intervals through the night. To date, Ryan has been adjusted regularly for 6 months and he is a completely different child. He sleeps through the night most nights and has a happy, healthy demeanor. Dr. Keough explained that he had interference in his nervous system which was causing his body to react with sleepless nights and digestive upset. Our entire family now gets adjusted on a regular basis and slays healthy and well rested. THANKS YOU!!!”  ~Donna R.

The common ‘discomforts’ of pregnancy may be trying to tell you something..

“Dr. Keough adjusted me throughout my pregnancy and I felt fantastic. I believe perfect alignment of me and my baby from chiro work along with Hypnobirthing made my birth VERY EASY. It was so easy that I had my baby at home not realizing how far into labor I was!” ~ Katie B.

Perhaps you are thinking about about having your baby all natural or even considering a home birth. Maybe, all you want is to go through your pregnancy with as little discomfort as possible. Whatever your goal is this post will answer any questions you have about pregnancy and how chiropractic can help. I see pregnant women every day in my practice and all have different goals and desires for their pregnancy, labor and delivery. I am hear to support you in the best possible way.

This idea of a home birth may sound strange, but is gaining popularity. If your doctor has classified your pregnancy as “complicated” this is not a good option for you and you are better off having your baby in the hospital. While a home birth or even going all- natural isn’t for everyone, if you are in the majority of women and in good health and having a normal and uncomplicated pregnancy then this is an option for you.

These are real questions I hear each week from pregnant women in my practice:

- I am planning an all- natural birth, and even I’m even discussing the option of a home birth, how can chiropractic help me?

- I just found out my baby is breech! I heard chiropractic may be able to help?

- I am having intense round ligament pain, can chiropractic help me with that?

- I am having lower back pain and I don’t want to take any medication, but can I have a chiropractic adjustment while I’m pregnant?

I will address each of these questions based of my experience and knowledge of how the human body works and responds to a chiropractic adjustment.

From the ICPA website:

“Chiropractic care benefits all aspects of your body’s ability to be healthy. This is accomplished by working with the nervous system–the communication system between your brain and body. Doctors of Chiropractic work to correct spinal, pelvic and cranial misalignments (subluxations). When misaligned, these structures create an imbalance in surrounding muscles and ligaments. Additionally, the resulting nerve system stress may affect the body’s ability to function optimally.”
The Webster protocol is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/ SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is facilitated.

I want an all- natural birth, maybe even a home birth, how can chiropractic help me?

When planning to have an all- natural birth be sure to be evaluate for proper spinal alignment. Having your spine and pelvis in the optimal position while you are pregnant ensures that you reduce the intra-uterine constraint that occurs with in un-balanced perlvis. This may contribute to increased likelihood of many structural defects including a breech baby or a more difficult labor and delivery which can make your all- natural labor and delivery more difficult.

I just found out my baby is breech! I heard chiropractic may be able to help?

It is normal for your baby to be in the breech position until about 31-32 weeks. However, by 33-35 weeks if your baby is not yet in the head down position your doctor will start discussing the possibility of a C-section. This can be a scary conversation for women. About one in three mothers now give birth by cesarean section, a record level for the United States. Chiropractic and the Webster protocol may assist pregnant mothers that are carrying their baby in the breech presentation by first correcting the pelvic misalignment and torsion of the sacrum and secondly releasing the increased tone in the round ligaments and relaxing the intra-uterine constraint with gentle tissue manipulation. By “normalizing” the mother’s structure the baby is given the opportunity to shift into the correct head down position for birth. This will eliminate the need for cesarean section in most cases.

I am having intense round ligament pain, can chiropractic help me with that?

Most women will experience the very common round ligament pain that is associated with the normal development and growth of her baby and the drastic changes that take place during pregnancy. However, this pain can be excruciating and debilitating for some women if they have increased torsion or misalignment in their pelvic region. The round ligaments (and other surrounding uterine ligaments) that hold the uterus in space branch off the pelvis and become tighter as the mother’s belly begins to grow, this is normal. However, if the mother’s pelvis is misaligned and unbalanced those round ligaments will become more tense on one side verses the other side. This may cause severe round ligament pain. Chiropractic and Webster protocol can align the mother’s pelvis and decrease the tension in her round ligaments leading to a more comfortable, high quality pregnancy.

I am having lower back pain and I don’t want to take any medication, but can I have a chiropractic adjustment while I’m pregnant?

Most women experience a number of neuromuscular and biomechanical problems during pregnancy which respond favorably to gentle, safe, noninvasive chiropractic care.

Here is what occurs biomechanically inside the mother’s body during pregnancy.

1. The release of the  hormone Relaxin causes muscles and ligaments to relax and prepare for birth but allows joints to more easily misalign and become irritated.

2. The increase in weight gain and  change in weight distribution will increase demand and fatigue on spinal and pelvic muscles which increase stress on spinal and pelvic ligaments.

3. The increase in lumbar and thoracic curves will further increase the above stress on joints and increase the occurrence of spinal and pelvic joint misalignment’s. These changes effect the pelvis and spinal muscles, ligaments and other soft tissue supportive tissue. These changes can also cause strain/sprain of the pelvic and spinal structures and alter the normal curvatures and biomenchanics of the spine. This results in an increase stress on the body which may lead to pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic addresses the above biomechanical issues decreasing the pain and the likelihood of needing pain medication.

Mother’s in my practice that receive Chiropractic and Webster protocol during pregnancy reported a comfortable, higher quality pregnancy and an easier labor and delivery. Just like the mother’s body changes to accommodate the new baby, treatment style will change to accommodate the mother’s body. Read about what other mom’s in my practice are saying below.

“I came to Dr. Felicity at 32 weeks pregnant with my baby in the breech presentation and severe low back pain. Within 3 treatments, coming twice a week my son had turned and was no longer breech. My back pain also became much better. She really saved me throughout my pregnancy.”   ~Ashlee M.

“I came in to see Dr. Keough at 38 weeks with INTENSE pain in my lower left side. Dr. Keough informed me that my pelvis was out of alignment and that was causing the round ligament pain on one side. After one treatment my pain was gone and I went into labor that weekend!” ~ Melissa T.

“I was 35 weeks when my doctor started discussing the possibility of needing to do a c-section. This was not something I ever imagine I would have to do. All I wanted was to have a natural birth. I began researching my options and I found Dr. Keough on the icpa’s website (www.icpa4kids.org). I decided to to make an appointment and go forward with her recommendations. By my 37th week, I was headed to my 5th visit with Dr. Keough after seeing my OB. I had very good news for her. MY BABY IS HEAD DOWN! I shouted. I knew the possibility of the baby shifting back to the breech position so naturally I continued with our treatment plan. I gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 39 weeks and I did not need a C-Section!” ~ Amy V.

“Working with Dr. Keough has been easy, gratifying and fun. She takes the time to thoroughly explain everything she does while at the same time makes you feel very comfortable. She asked me what my goals were and worked with me in achieving those goals. Its very refreshing to have a health professional that shows so much care and concern. Thanks for being our family’s primary care physcian!” ~Debbie O.

“I think it is important to see a chiro who specializes in Webster technique because before I saw Dr Keough I went to a chiro who used only SOT method and I had issues not beeing addressed such as annoying and nagging round ligament pain. I really believe that many common ‘discomforts’ of pregnancy can be eliminated through regular chiropractic adjustments. Keep up the great work Dr Keough!!” Katie B.

Adjustments Aid in Sleep cycle

“My adjustments with Dr. Keough have allowed me to do simple, daily tasks again. Since my spine and posture have been corrected I am now able to work out and regain my core strength which is very necessary, since I spend the weekend’s doing wrestling shows. My adjustments have aided in my body’s sleep cycle. I feel energized during the day, rather than sluggish. I’m having restful night sleeps, which were uncommon before I started chiropractic.  When ever feel under the weather or like an illness may be coming on, I come in to be adjusted and the following day I feel 100% better and wake up with more energy.”   ~Joe P.        IL

Crabby and Sick to Happy and Crawling!

“My 11 months old daughter, Brooke, was having a lot of ear infections and after her ear tube surgery and no change in her condition. Brooke had a constant ear infection since December 2009 and on top of that, she was not crawling like she should have been for her age. After speaking with Dr. Felicity she discovered the problems started with a fall Brooke had back in November. We saw plenty of doctors, had many visits to the ER, and multiple rounds of antibiotics. None of these helped Brooke. I was desperate and so decided to go with surgery, which didn’t help either.  After beginning chiropractic care Brooke is a completely different child. Before we started coming, she cried all the time. Now she is the happiest kid! She is also crawling normally and is almost walking. She has had no ear problems since she started her treatments! Chiropractic has changed my crabby, sick child into a happy, crawling, normal child. It truly is a miracle! Thank you!”   ~Jaimee F., Maryland Heights, MO

Double Ear Infection Gone After First Adjustment

Since starting at my new job at a bank in November 2010, I was getting really sick every 2 weeks; ear infection, respiratory infection, congestion, etc.  I was miserable for 6 months straight.  Finally, I went and saw Dr. Keough.  The day I saw her I was really sick.  I have a double ear infection and could barely talk.  I was in a lot of pain.  She adjusted me and explained to me everything she was doing because I was nervous because I had never been to a chiropractor.  I woke up the next morning feeling like a new person.  I could breath, my head was clear, my ears no longer hurt, and I even had my voice back.  I was amazed at the results!  Sine I have been seeing Dr. Keough the last 6 months, I have not been sick.  My body feels great!  I will be going to Dr. Keough for the rest of my life.  I am truly blessed she got me to come see her and very thankful she cared so much about my health.  THANK YOU DR. KEOUGH!!

“Since my visits began with Dr. Keough I feel so much better overall! I rarely have back pain, neck pain or headaches anymore.  I had a headache almost every day for a month, once I started getting adjusted my headaches stopped almost immediately.  I am also very susceptible to upper respiratory issues. Since starting chiropractic care I’ve hardly had any issues.  I just thought I would have to live with all these symptoms for the rest of my life…then, I started chiropractic care with Dr. Keough. I feel great! Thank you.”      ~Heather C. O’Fallon, MO

Drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in U.S., data show

Fueling the surge are prescription pain and anxiety drugs that are potent, highly addictive and especially dangerous when combined with one another or

with other drugs or alcohol.

By Lisa Girion, Scott Glover and Doug Smith, Los Angeles Times

2:55 PM PDT, September 17, 2011

Propelled by an increase in prescription narcotic overdoses, drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the United States, a Times analysis of government data has found.

Drugs exceeded motor vehicle accidents as a cause of death in 2009, killing at least 37,485 people nationwide, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While most major causes of preventable death are declining, drugs are an exception. The death toll has doubled in the last decade, now claiming a life every 14 minutes. By contrast, traffic accidents have been dropping for decades because of huge investments in auto safety.

Public health experts have used the comparison to draw attention to the nation’s growing prescription drug problem, which they characterize as an epidemic. This is the first time that drugs have accounted for more fatalities than traffic accidents since the government started tracking drug-induced deaths in 1979.

Fueling the surge in deaths are prescription pain and anxiety drugs that are potent, highly addictive and especially dangerous when combined with one another or with other drugs or alcohol. Among the most commonly abused are OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax and Soma. One relative new comers to the scene is Fentanyl, a painkiller that comes in the form of patches and lollipops and is 100 times more powerful than morphine.

Such drugs now cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined. ***  from Dr Barbara:  Perhaps the “War on Drugs” is targeted towards the wrong drugs???

“The problem is right here under our noses in our medicine cabinets,” said Laz Salinas, a sheriff’s commander in Santa Barbara, which has seen a dramatic rise in prescription drug deaths in recent years.

Overdose victims range in age and circumstance from teenagers who pop pills to get a heroin-like high to middle-aged working men and women who take medications prescribed for strained backs and bum knees and become addicted.

A review of hundreds of autopsy reports in Southern California reveals one tragic demise after another: A 19-year-old Army recruit, who had just passed his military physical, took a handful of Xanax and painkillers while partying with friends. A groom, anxious over his upcoming wedding, overdosed on a cocktail of prescription drugs. A teenage honors student overdosed on painkillers her father left in his medicine cabinet from a surgery years earlier. A toddler was orphaned after both parents overdosed on prescription drugs months apart. A grandmother suffering from chronic back pain apparently forgot she’d already taken her daily regimen of pills and ended up double dosing.  *** Notice that this epidemic crosses all ages and genders.  TELL THOSE YOU KNOW!!****

Many died after failed attempts at rehab — or after using one too many times while contemplating quitting. That’s apparently what happened to a San Diego woman found dead with a Fentanyl patch on her body, one of five she’d applied in the 24 hours before her death. Next to her on the couch was a notebook with information about rehab.

The seeds of the problem were planted more than a decade ago by well-meaning efforts by doctors to mitigate suffering, as well as aggressive sales campaigns by pharmaceutical manufacturers. In hindsight, the liberalized prescription of pain drugs “may in fact be the cause of the epidemic we’re now facing,” said Linda Rosenstock, dean of the UCLA School of Public Health.

In some ways, prescription drugs are more dangerous than illicit ones because users don’t have their guard up, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Opferman, head of a county task force on prescription drug-related crimes. “People feel they are safer with prescription drugs because you get them from a pharmacy and they are prescribed by a doctor,” Opferman said. “Younger people believe they are safer because they see their parents taking them. It doesn’t have the same stigma as using street narcotics.”

Lori Smith said she believes that’s what her son might have been thinking the night he died six months shy of his 16th birthday. Nolan Smith, of Aliso Viejo, loved to surf, sail and fish with his brother and father. He suffered from migraines and anxiety but showed no signs of drug abuse, his mother said.

The night before he died in January 2009, Nolan called his mother at work, asking for a ride to the girls’ basketball game at Aliso Niguel High School. Lori told him she couldn’t get away.

When Nolan didn’t come home that evening, his parents called police and his friends. His body was found the next morning on a stranger’s front porch.

A toxicology test turned up Zoloft, which had been prescribed for anxiety, and a host of other drugs that had not been prescribed, including two additional anti-anxiety drugs, as well as morphine and marijuana.

All investigators could give the family were theories.

“They said they will have parties where the kids will throw a bunch of pills in a bowl and the kids take them without knowing what they are,” Lori said. “We called all of his friends, but no one would say they were with him. But he must have been with someone. You just don’t do that by yourself.”

The triumph of public health policies that have improved traffic safety over the years through the use of seat belts, air bags and other measures stands in stark contrast to the nation’s record on prescription drugs. Even though more people are driving more miles, traffic fatalities have dropped by more than a third since the early 1970s to 36,284 in 2009. Drug-induced deaths had equaled or surpassed traffic fatalities in California, 22 other states and the District of Columbia even before the 2009 figures revealed the shift at the national level, according to the Times analysis.

The Centers for Disease Control collects data on all causes of death each year and analyzes them to identify health problems. Drug-induced deaths are mostly accidental overdoses but also include suicides and fatal diseases caused by drugs.

The CDC’s 2009 statistics are the agency’s most current. They are considered preliminary because they reflect 96% of death certificates filed. The remaining are deaths for which the causes were not immediately clear.

Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, years for which more detailed data are available. Deaths more than tripled among people aged 50 to 69, the Times analysis found. In terms of sheer numbers, the death toll is highest among people in their 40s.

Overdose deaths involving prescription painkillers, including OxyContin and Vicodin, and anti-anxiety drugs such as Valium and Xanax more than tripled between 2000 and 2008.

The rise in deaths corresponds with doctors prescribing more painkillers and anti-anxiety medications. The number of prescriptions for the strongest pain pills filled at California pharmacies, for instance, increased more than 43% since 2007 — and the doses grew by even more, nearly 50%, according to a review of prescribing data collected by the state.  *** Why aren’t drug companies and the doctor’s who prescribe these drugs held accountable?  Car manufacturers must abide by VERY strict rules and regulations.  Why are drug companies and the AMA immune to such scrutiny?  Could it be….$$$$?**

Those prescriptions provide relief to pain sufferers but also fuel a thriving black market. Prescription drugs are traded on Internet chat rooms that buzz with offers of “vikes,” “percs” and “oxys” for $10 to $80 a pill. They are sold on street corners along with heroin, marijuana and crack. An addiction to prescription drugs can be costly; a heavy OxyContin habit can run twice as much as a heroin addiction, authorities say.  *** And yet, what is the focus of the “War on Drugs”? ***

On a recent weekday morning, Los Angeles County undercover sheriff’s deputies posing as drug buyers easily purchased enough pills to fill a medicine cabinet on a sidewalk a few blocks south of Los Angeles City Hall.

The most commonly abused prescription drug, hydrocodone, also is the most widely prescribed drug in America, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Better known as Vicodin, the pain reliever is prescribed more often than the top cholesterol drug and the top antibiotic.

“We have an insatiable appetite for this drug — insatiable,” Joseph T. Rannazzisi, a top DEA administrator, told a group of pharmacists at a regulatory meeting in Sacramento.

In April, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy announced initiatives aimed at stanching prescription drug abuse. The plans include a series of drug take-back days, modeled after similar programs involving weapons, in which consumers are encouraged to turn leftover prescription drugs in to authorities. Another initiative would develop voluntary courses to train physicians on how to safely prescribe pain drugs, a curriculum that is not widely taught in medical schools. *** A curriculum that is not widely taught?  It’s all they do in their offices and yet it’s not widely taught?  So their training comes from the drug reps themselves who CLEARLY want more of their drug sold AND the doctor receives ‘kick backs’ for prescribing the drug.  Though we don’t want to say it, GREED is at the heart of this problem. ***

Initial attempts to reverse the trend in drug deaths — such as state-run prescription drug-monitoring programs aimed at thwarting “doctor-shopping” addicts — don’t appear to be having much effect, experts say.

“What’s really scary is we don’t know a lot about how to reduce prescription deaths,” said Amy S.B. Bohnert, a researcher at the University of Michigan Medical School who is studying ways to lower the risk of prescription drugs.  *** REALLY?  Our governmental agencies can’t figure out how to reduce prescription deaths?  Boy, that sure gives me great confidence!  How about SEVERE penalties for those who manufacture and dispense these potentially fatal drugs?  How about EDUCATION so that individuals choose health from the moment of conception? ***

“It’s a wonderful medical advancement that we can treat pain,” Bohnert said. “But we haven’t figured out the safety belt yet.”
